"Party!"
Some emails are worth framing. This is one of them.
That's Principal Lindsey Leonard of Pilot Grove R-X, writing to her team.
What I love about that email isn't just the numbers. It's the exclamation points. That's what it sounds like when a whole staff has been working toward something, and it finally shows up.
And the growth is real. Pilot Grove's elementary students have improved for three years running, not just within a single year. Within this year alone, reading proficiency on i-Ready rose from 30.5% to 69.7%, with 39% of students moving from below proficient to proficient or above. First grade made the biggest jump, from 15% to 91%.
Cole County district saw similar results, with reading proficiency rising from 35.6% to 76.5% and 41% of students moving into proficient or advanced.
So what made the difference?
STEP UP consultant Jessica Gray points to one key shift: moving teachers away from textbook dependency and grounding daily instruction in clear proficiency scales and writing rubrics. When teachers know exactly what proficiency looks like, they can teach toward it on purpose, and students rise to meet it.
That's what closing the alignment gap looks like in a real school, with real kids, and a principal who can't wait to share the news.
